Welcome
Aboard !
We are the Newport Beach Council of the Navy
League of the United States.
The Navy League of the United States was founded in 1902 with the encouragement of
President Theodore Roosevelt. The Navy League is unique among
military-oriented associations in that it is a civilian organization
dedicated to the education of our citizens, including our elected officials,
and the support of the men and women of the sea services and their families.
The objective and purpose of the Navy League is educational and motivational. We must
acquire and display before the citizens of our country information as to the conditions of
our naval and maritime forces. We must awaken interest and support in all matters which
aid our maritime capabilities.
To
this end, the Navy League works closely with the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast
Guard, and US-flag Merchant Marine through a network of over 330 councils in
the United States and around the world. The Navy League has nearly 70,000
active members.
The Navy League supports America's young people through its youth
programs, including sponsorship of the US Naval Sea Cadet Corps, the Navy
League Scholarship Program, and the Samuel Eliot Morison Essay Contest.
Individual councils are also involved in promoting youth-oriented activities
in their communities such as NJROTC, MCJROTC, and ROTC units along with
other recognized youth programs. Local councils and national headquarters
provide over $250,000 scholarships and awards every year.
Over the years, the Navy League has compiled an impressive record of
accomplishments. Today the Navy League is widely respected by citizens, community and
industrial leaders, and public officials. Navy League programs are welcomed in communities
throughout the nation, and members are recognized for their integrity and patriotism.
The inception of the Newport Beach Council
dates back to the spring of 1987 when its founder Walter
Ziglar organized a group of 43
individuals, and over the years has maintained a
steady growth in active membership with over 300 current members. Over the
years the Newport Beach Council has worked closely with the Tustin and El
Toro Marine Bases providing assistance to families, and presenting awards to
Marine's of the Quarter / Year. With the closing of both bases, our Council
now serves the interests of the Miramar Marine Base.
The Newport Beach Council has also adopted
the West Coasts newest and largest ship, the Nimitz
Class Carrier - USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74), and the Wasp Class Carriers
- USS Essex (LHD 2) and USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6), USCG
Narwahl, and the USS
Belleau Wood (LHA 3). Our Council actively participates in the award
ceremonies for Sailor's of the Quarter and Sailor of the Year as well as
Change of Command Ceremonies.
We are a very active council. Programs and
activities are the life-blood of this organization. We also have a yearly
cruise to Catalina Island, bay cruises and mixers, one-day outings to places
of interest such as The Getty Museum, air shows,
The 4 July Old Glory Boat Parade, and day cruises on our adopted ships. If
you are into programs and activities, the Newport Beach Council is the one
to join. There is an
application on
this Web site to fill out and submit to our Council for consideration.
While you are at our Web site, be sure to visit our
new
Council Store.
This is a great way for you to help our Council earn money for award
programs and Council events. We have entered into affiliate programs with
some of the most popular on-line sites on the internet and every time that
you click on to one of them and make a purchase, our Council receives a
commission on every sale. This only works if you access their link through
our website first each and every time that you make a purchase from
them. All purchases are monitored by an independent company and our
commission checks will come directly from them. So far we have finalized
agreements with the following familiar brand names: Amazon.com, FTD.com,
Gifts.com, PETsMART.com, SmarterKids.com, Wine.com, ZanyBrainy.com,
enews.com, gear.com, OmahaSteaks.com, TheSharperImage.com, and
HickoryFarms.com, with more to come.
